Creating Readers – Margee Hill
2016 Mini-Grant Recipient
A literacy council helps develop the reading culture of Pleasant View Elementary School by selecting activities in which students participate. The student literacy leaders form book clubs for grades 3-5 and meet each Thursday during lunch to discuss and share books. Each child in the club will receive a book and join a discussion group . Students will then be able to take their book home to share with their family and add to their home library so other members of the family can enjoy. The photos below illustrate first grade students who each got a copy of the book “We are Growing” and then every student created a take home project (including activities that they can do with their parents). The project introduces children to new concepts and adds new words to their vocabulary to share with family and friends.
